In 1989, a photographer took the picture of a lifetime.
While flying in a helicopter over a storming sea, he captured the shot.
The lighthouse was fighting against gale force winds and hundred-foot high waves. Walls of water smashed through the lower windows, ripping away the front door and flooding the bottom level.
Inside the tower, lighthouse worker Théodore Malgorn heard the whap-whap-whap of the helicopter rotors and ran downstairs hoping for rescue. That’s when the photographer snapped the picture.
At that very moment, a wave rose over the lighthouse with a thunderous growl. Théodore realized the tower was about to be swallowed, so he ducked inside the opening. A blink later, the wave slammed against the concrete walls, barely missing him.
The lightkeeper survived by only a split-second. Théodore later said he would have died if the door had been farther away.
The photo, known as “The Wave,” exploded in popularity and won an international award. Today, it's the world’s most famous lighthouse print.
It could have easily been a tragic picture showing the last moment of a man’s life. But it turned out to be a happy ending, leaving viewers to ponder the fine line between life and death.
A Lesson For Your Business
Think about the marketplace. There are things we can control and some we cannot (uh, COVID). Sometimes it can feel like you're out-of-control, swept away by powerful forces and tossed from side to side. Many entrepreneurs struggle with overwhelm and the constant fear of being swallowed up.
But those with a plan often survive. Those without one often perish.
That’s why marketing is one of the most important plans for your business. Being strategic with your marketing can actually protect your business from massive storms.
A smart plan provides the lifeblood for leads and sales. Without one, you entrust your livelihood to guesswork. Crossing your fingers for word-of-mouth referrals is an unreliable strategy for paying your mortgage.
However, many business owners remain paralyzed. They're confused about where to invest their marketing dollars. It's a common problem, being so “close” to your business that you're blind to the obvious. Ever notice how hard it is to describe what you do in simple ways?
Think about your business. Can you easily explain:
Your one-liner?
Your million-dollar message?
Your signature solution?
Your traffic source?
Your lead magnet?
Your bullseye product?
Your authority amplifier?
Your conversion event?
